Ballarat Base Hospital Development
September 22, 2020

Balpara was engaged by Powercor to contribute to the development of the new Ballarat Base Hospital upgrade, a major commercial development for the regional Victorian city.

Project Overview

This commercial development involves the creation of a new emergency department, at least 100 additional beds and several new wards for the Ballarat Base Hospital.

Powercor engaged Balpara to oversee the classification of the site, which was based on geological maps, aerial photography study and reports, to enable appropriate engineering design. This was the second component of a two-part delivery provided by Balpara for this significant commercial project.

Project Scope

  • Overseeing the surveying of site surrounds, including water, drainage and terrain.
  • Arranging for soil testing, soil classification and the provision of a profile assessment report.
  • Identifying abnormal moisture conditions on site and making geotechnical recommendations for grading and drainage to avoid exaggerated soil movement.
  • Facilitating the creation of footing design guidelines.
  • Organising further inspection of footing excavations to verify founding depth and material, and allowable bearing pressure in accordance with requirements.
  • Developing recommendations for subgrade preparations.
  • Overseeing the investigation of site and surrounding terrain to determine the Wind Classification Design Speed.

Value Add

Balpara was able to provide the client with a more streamlined and robust service, having been involved in the initial phase of the project.

Relevant Accreditation/Quality Standards

  • This report complies with all specifications and requirements outlined in AS 2870-2011 and Foundation & Footings Society (Vic.).
