Sports Field Lighting Design and Engineering, Ivanhoe

Balpara delivered a turnkey sports field lighting design and engineering solution for the upgrade of the existing oval lighting at the Ivanhoe Sports Precinct. 

 

The project drew together surveying, underground service locating, geotechnical assessment, specialist sports lighting design, lux plot analysis, structural engineering and electrical design into a single site-specific solution, developed to meet the client's requirements and relevant Australian Standards.


Project Overview


As part of the Capital Works Program for the Ivanhoe Sports Precinct, Balpara was engaged to deliver the multidisciplinary design and engineering services needed to upgrade the existing sports field lighting. 


The brief called for a modern, reliable lighting solution that would improve illumination across the playing surface, enhance safety and usability, and support ongoing community and sporting activity. 


Balpara brought together site investigation, feature surveying, underground service locating, geotechnical assessment, sports lighting design, lux plot analysis, lighting pole and footing design, underground conduit design and electrical engineering to develop a coordinated, construction-ready design. 


Considering the lighting, structural, ground condition and electrical requirements together from the outset allowed potential conflicts between disciplines to be identified and resolved early, in line with AS/NZS 3000 and the relevant structural design standards. 


The completed design was developed in accordance with applicable Australian Standards and project requirements, including AS/NZS 3000 for electrical installations and relevant structural design standards. 


Project Scope


Balpara worked collaboratively with the client to address the site, lighting, structural and electrical requirements of the upgrade.


Site Investigation: Balpara assessed ground and site conditions through Before You Dig Australia searches, electrical asset inspection, Ground Penetrating Radar and feature surveying, supported by geotechnical and soil testing. Findings were consolidated into a single report to inform the design.


Lighting Concept Design: These findings established in establishing existing site conditions, underground services and relevant site features, allowing the design team to develop an accurate and coordinated concept design.

Lighting Assessment: Balpara assessed the structural footing requirements for the poles and tailored the solution to the client's needs, with lighting designed to a minimum of 150 lux to meet Australian Standards and the client's brief.

 

Design and Delivery: Balpara delivered the AS3000 concept design, lux plot analysis, underground conduit concept design, bill of quantities and final detailed design, based on the existing underground schematics and conduits. All site information was consolidated into a clear, aligned format to support construction and tendering, making the documentation easy for the client to interpret and the delivery process smooth.

Value Add


Balpara's integrated approach gave the client a single point of accountability across the technical requirements of the sports field lighting upgrade.


By bringing site investigation, surveying, asset locating, geotechnical assessment, lighting, structural and electrical design together under one team, existing site constraints were identified early and built into the design from the start. This reduced the risk of conflicts between disciplines and giving the client a clear pathway to construction.
