Frankston City Council requested Balpara’s services to undertake an assessment of lux levels at a proposed raised pedestrian crossing on Brunnings Road in Carrum Downs.
Project Overview
This pedestrian crossing upgrade forms part of a series of proposed works for the wider McCormicks Precinct initiated by Frankston City Council; providing upgrades to infrastructure such as pedestrian refuge islands, splitter islands, roadside parking spots and intersection works. The proposed school crossing relocation was put forward for several reasons, including enhancing pedestrian safety by increasing crossing visibility and providing a more strategic road crossing location for school children closer to the school entry.
This upgrade also includes the construction of a raised platform for the crossing, drainage improvements, and converting the current nature strip across from the school to parking. These changes will further improve pedestrian visibility, add to available parking and ensure accessibility during and after rainfall.
Scope
Balpara was requested to provide a LUX assessment to ensure the lighting levels at the new crossing location would be sufficient and to determine, based on these lighting levels, whether a new light was to be installed or if an upgrade to the current light would be adequate.
The following lux information was provided as part of our services:
- Lux plot showing existing lux levels
- Lux plot showing light levels of the 2 nearby existing street lights being upgraded to 70W LED
- Recommendations of an LED lighting upgrade and/or new lighting required at the crossing to meet current Australian standards
Value Add
Balpara was able to complete a Lux plot diagram analysis to assess the current light levels and provided recommendations regarding potential upgrades or replacements.
Relevant Accreditation/Quality Standards
All designs were carried out in accordance with Frankston City Council Standard Drawing and Specifications and adhere to AS/NZS 1158 standards.
