Fawkner Street Upgrade
April 18, 2024

Balpara was engaged by Hume City Council as part of a streetscape upgrade on Fawkner Street, incorporating safety lighting assessment and design at stage 1.

Project Overview

The work for this project was undertaken in Fawkner Street, between Mickleham Road and Ardlie Street. Fawkner Street is a collector road that includes the Fawkner Street Village shops and is a main connection to the residential properties and road network within Westmeadows. The precinct has a distinct heritage character as well as a strong relationship to the natural features of the Moonee Ponds creek corridor, which was taken into consideration in the design.

Balpara completed a safety lighting assessment and design for functional and feature lighting at this first stage of the project.

Scope of Work

Balpara completed a safety lighting assessment and design for functional and feature lighting, established the power supply and servicing requirements, and project managed the installation of lighting.

Lighting Assessment

  • Site inspections were carried out, with existing electrical and lighting asset information and servicing requirements reviewed.
  • Safety lighting assessment.
  • Identification of rectification works required to reinstate the area to minimum lighting standards as required.
  • Summary report with recommendations provided.

Concept & Detail Design

  • Design presented to Council in line with AS3000, AS/NZS 1158 and any other relevant standards incorporating computation details and sketches, which included relocation of light/electrical pole.
  • Bespoke feature lighting design including feature lighting to existing and proposed trees, and lighting within proposed fixtures and furniture.
  • Documentation and a Bill of Quantities and cost estimate for lighting design (including both bespoke landscape lighting and AS lighting) was issued for Council to tender.
  • Liaising with council landscape architect to coordinate all works with Civil and Landscape documentation.

Value Add

Balpara directly interfaced with Jemena on behalf of the council to streamline the pole relocation process as we have a long-standing relationship with the power authority. Through Balpara's feature lighting design we engineered an aesthetic outcome to include up light of trees, LED strip lighting on benches, tables and chairs. This will result in a safe and visually enjoyable shopping precinct at night.
